Folk Game Tug-of-war

Tug-of-war is a Korean folk game in which people cultivate unity while testing their strength and wisdom.

It is a long-standing traditional folk game unique to the Korean nation.

In olden times, two opposing teams pulled the many branch ropes fixed on the main thick rope.

It was played between two villages or towns and the members of the teams were numbered in hundreds.

The game has now developed into a popular traditional sports event.

The modern-day game is played by pulling against each other on opposite ends of the rope without branches. Body weight and physical strength are important factors in winning the game but what is more important is that all the team members move as one at the command of the coach.

It is an interesting game which many people can play at any place or at any time, and increase physical strength of the body including the arms and legs and promote mutual unity.
